What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are artificial root forms that are placed under the gum into the jaw bone, to replace one or multiple missing teeth custom made crowns, bridges or dentures are attached to these anchored implants and help restore normal function and aesthetics.
Proper planning, placement and maintenance are the keys to successful dental implants and teeth replacement that look and feel like your own.
What is involved in getting a Dental Implant?
A denial implant is a significant procedure spread usually over 3-6 months.
Initial Visit
In the intial visit the implant is placed under the gum in the bone. This can be done through a small opening in the gum or the gum may be peeled back to place the implants in the bone. After implant placement the gum is either sealed back over the implant or a healing connector is put in place until the next consultation. The implants are usually left for around 12 weeks to allow the bone to adapt to a seane the implant. Implant placement is usually done under local anaesthetics. There is no sensation that an implant is present and they become a completely accepted part of the body.
First Follow Up Consultation
The first follow up consultation is usually scheduled in 3 months time. Enough time for the jaw bone to securely grow around the implant. During the second consultation the dentist will check the healing process.
If the gums were sealed over the implants at placement time, then the implants are uncovered and healed abutments are p[laced and left for a few weeks. These are circular and extend from the implant through the gum and allow the gum to grow around them very much like the gum wraps around a tooth.
Few Weeks Later
After a few weeks the healing caps are removed and moulds are made for the final crowns or bridges to be made and placed.
Benefits Of A Dental implant
When All The Teeth Are Missing In An Arch
Where all the teeth are missing in an arch then a minimum of 4 to 6 implants are required to secure a fixed bridge. Two implants are usually sufficient to anchor and stabilise a full removable denture. For a person who has full dentures wither solution will have a remarkably positive impact on chewing enjoyment, conform and ultimately their health.
Where a Single Or Multiple Teeth Are Missing
Where a single or multiple teeth are missing the benefit of not damaging adjoining teeth to place a bridge is obviously significant for a single tooth implant. The cost is not that much more than a bridge placed.
Success And Limitations Of Dental Implants
Success rates of over 90% are usually quoted. Older age is generally not a limitation to receiving dental implants if the person is healthy. For young people implants are usually placed after growth has been completed. Certain medical conditions such as diabetes high blood pressure, heart disease and smoking increase the failure rate but do not preclude receiving implants
