What is involved in a Root Canal procedure?

A root canal is a procedure where all of the pulp of the affected tooth is removed over the course of one or more visits. A root canal is made up of a number of separate procedures which may include:

  • If there is an active infection, your dentist may prescribe you with a course of antibiotics which will need to be completed before the root canal procedure can take place.
  • Your dentist will apply a local anaesthetic to the affected area, ensuring that you experience the minimum discomfort possible.
  • The tooth canal is then cleaned with a titanium drill, and all associated nerve material, tooth pulp, infection and debris is completely removed
  • The tooth is then disinfected and sealed using up to date materials and dentistry techniques.
  • Depending on the damage caused to the tooth, your dentist may apply either a composite filling or a porcelain crown to restore the aesthetic look of the tooth and create a permanent restoration.
